Just over a mile off the shore of North Berwick in the south-east of Scotland lies the Bass Rock, a most impressive volcanic rocky outcrop in the Firth of Forth, that has the largest breeding colony of Northern Gannets in the world, with over 150,000 birds. Further south in England are the Farne Islands, a mile off the coast of Northumbria and run by the National Trust. The Islands are very important breeding grounds for a variety of seabirds such as Puffins, Guillimots, Razorbills and Shags, four species of gull, Kittiwake, Black-headed, Lesser and Greater Black-backed, and three species of tern, Sandwich, Common and Arctic.
